Best Rock Bands

There are many candidates that could easily be given a place among the best rock bands. Each individual music fan has their own unique preferences and tastes. Some love mainstream music while others prefer underground groups. The rock and roll genre itself has been divided into numerous sub genres, each with its own original sound and character. That being said, there are some musicians who seem elevated above the rest.

The Beatles

The Beatles earned their place at the top of the best rock bands list. They were wildly popular and extremely influential. Even today, some musicians list the Beatles as one of their biggest influencers.  The Beatles stormed the rock and pop scene during the 1960s. Originally from Liverpool, England, Beatlemania stretched all the way across the ocean to the United States. The lineup included four of the most well-known musicians in music history: John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.

Harrison, McCartney and Lennon first joined together, with Starr signing on later. The original name was derived as a tribute to Buddy Holly and the Crickets. The original spelling was slightly different, appearing as the “Beatals.”  This moniker lasted only a few months before other names were applied, including the Silver Beatles, Johnny and the Moondogs and Long John and the Beetles. The band enjoyed an unprecedented run that ended when the band broke up in 1970. Let It Be and the single The Long and Winding Road would be the Beatles’ final releases.

The Grateful Dead

The American rock band the Grateful Dead is another strong contender for a position as one of the best rock bands to ever step foot on stage. The band was born in the San Francisco Bay area in 1965. Their sound combined a rich variety of elements taken from a diverse selection of genres, including reggae, blues, folk music, blues, rock and country as well as psychedelia, space rock and improvisational jazz.

The main members of the Grateful Dead stayed together up until the tragic loss of Jerry Garcia. At the age of 53, Garcia passed away in a rehabilitation clinic on August 9th, 1995. Heart attack was listed as the cause of death, which may have been brought on by weight problems, drug addiction and sleep apnea. After the loss of Garcia, the band decided to officially break up.

Led Zeppelin

Whether a music lover is a rock fan or not they have most likely heard something by Led Zeppelin. The band released nine albums over a decade and became known as the most popular rock and roll group in the entire world. Their record sales were enormous, with over 50 million records sold in the United States and over 200 million sold throughout the world. The band formed in 1968 and included Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham.
