Christian Metal

Much like Christian rock, Christian metal is heavy metal music that focuses on religious themes. The musicians are generally practicing Christians and add elements of their beliefs to their music. Lyrics often send a Christian message, set to traditional metal sounds. The genre is sometimes referred to as white metal and is most prominent in faith based networks. Christian metal does not actually refer to one type of metal music. Bands that use religious themes can be found throughout all of heavy metal’s sub genres. What ties them together as Christian metal acts is their use of religious lyrics and themes.

The Basis of a Christian Metal Band

In terms of sound, Christian metal bands use the same instruments that their fellow metal groups use. Many incorporate bass, drums, electric guitar and vocals.  Christian metal bands are also associated with Jesus music as well as Christian rock and unblack metal. The genre helps expand the musical horizons of heavy metal fans who are also dedicated to Christian beliefs. Beyond themes, Christian metal band sound just like other acts in the metal sub genre they are placed under.

The Origins of Christian Metal

The foundation of Christian metal formed during the late 60s and early 70s. During this time, a hippie movement referred to as the Jesus movement was becoming popular. The movement focused on Christian beliefs and morals and was made up primarily of hippies who had adopted Christianity. Members of this movement were often called Jesus People, and went on to make what would be labeled Jesus music. The genre was located mostly in southern California due to the higher quantity of hippies who had converted to the Christian faith.

Later, American singer songwriter Larry Norman would be credited as one of the first Christian rock musicians. Norma produced his debut album, Upon This Rock, which released in 1969. Some fans consider it to be the very first Christian rock album released. By the 1980s, the Christian metal sub genre had emerged with popular acts including Stryper, Saint, Leviticus and Messiah Prophet.
